Drawing, Painting, Digital Art | BLACK LILY STUDIO
top of page

I have been looking back at a lot of old work lately thinking about where I am going next in my studio and in my life.

The formal education and experiences trying different media while in college set me up for a never ending exploration of how different approaches, mediums and techniques are never ending in possibilities. This is something crucial along with a core stamina and curiosity I hope I transfer to my students.

Thirty years ago I saw an exhibit at The Nelson Atkins Museum by an artist that perfectly mixed painting , wood sculpture and later ceramics.

Jennifer Bartlett was a young artist then and rising to success. Her work transformed space , transformed my ideas about mixing methods. A specific piece with a large white wooden boat on the floor had a full color painted backdrop . When you stood at a distance the boat was part of the painting. There is no other way to describe it. The sensation was transformative for me the love of color along with texture and perspective was a perfect blend of all the techniques I love to explore. Drawing and painting the backdrop creates an atmosphere, creates and actual place in your mind , in front of you and when combined with a three dimensional object it becomes a place, something set in time. I hope you enjoy the image slides here a mix of many techniques that all have played an important part in the combinations of media in my current work my continued explorations ,growth and passion for teaching .
